I’d like to share with you the benediction I wrote to go with my sermon on Matthew 6:25-34, “Be God’s Wildflower — Be Worry Free.” A benediction is a blessing from God that is pronounced by one person over another.

The One Benediction You (and Others!) Need

Answered prayer. Success. Victory. We all want to be blessed, to achieve great things, and to overcome our challenges. But when we reach for these desires we can never quite grasp them. The pursuit of happiness never makes anyone happy.

That’s why years ago my spiritual father, Ray Ortlund, encouraged me to “Be all and only for Jesus!” He wanted the best for me. And so he liked to pray Psalm 20 for me. Recently, Psalm 20 inspired me to write a “Benediction of Devotion.”

God Dawns on You!

See Jesus' Smile in the SunshineEarly one winter morning at the Prince of Peace Abbey I got up to pray. It was still dark. I stood at the edge of the hill and looked out over the valley below and the mountains in the distant horizon.

As the birds chirped, I stood in the dark, shivering, and waiting for the sun to rise. I prayed my psalm for the morning: Psalm 67, which is a benediction that goes back to the original one that God gave to Moses 3,500 years ago to bless the Israelites (Numbers 6:24-26).
