What a treasure awaits us in Psalm 91! There’s a reason why so many people consider it a favorite chapter and prayer in the Bible.
As you’ll see in my Psalm 91 Meditation this Psalm is an endearing story about a little chick finding safe refuge under the wing of it’s mother, prevailing in battles, and ultimately trampling on Satan. It’s a healing prayer featuring four powerful Hebrew names for God. It’s one of the electric passages of the Bible that is truly a gateway into abundant life with Jesus.
When we pray Psalm 91 with Jesus we step into another world: the Kingdom of the Heavens in our midst today!
Jesus’ Invitation to Us
Our Lord Jesus found strength and wisdom for life and ministry by drawing upon the Father in secret. If only we’d open the eyes of our hearts to see the unseen with him! Even now the risen Christ is in our midst. As we prepare to pray Psalm 91 with Jesus let’s consider these words of our Lord…
“Pray in secret to Abba Father. He welcomes you into the secret place of the Kingdom of the Heavens, where he blesses you abundantly.” (Matthew 6:4, 6, 18 paraphrase)
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how I long to gather you close to me in my Kingdom of the Heavens, even as a mother hen gathers her chicks under her wings.” (Matthew 23:37, paraphrase)
Yes, Lord Jesus, you are here to help us to pray Psalm 91 from our hearts. We want to open the eyes of our hearts to you as here in Psalm 91 you offer yourself to us and offer for us to come under your wings.
Prepare your Heart
To experience this Psalm 91 meditation you need a few minutes in which you can set aside everything else and quiet our heart in God’s presence. To get started perhaps my Breath Prayer will help: “Jesus my shelter… I stay in your shadow.” (Inspired by Psalm 91:1 and Matthew 23:37)
Breathe in as prayer of putting your trust in Jesus, relying on his peace that heals and protects you…
Breathe out as a prayer of letting go of everything but Jesus…
Breathe in as you pray, “Jesus my shelter….”
Breathe out as you pray, “I stay in your shadow.”
Now pray my Psalm 91 meditation slowly, from your heart…
My Psalm 91 Meditation
He who dwells in the secret place of El-yone’ (the Most High God who sees everything)
Will rest in the shadow of El Shaddai, (the Almighty God who nurtures us like a mother hen caring for her little chicks).
I will say of Yahweh (the I AM who has promised to love us intimately forever)
He is my refuge and my fortress, my El-o-heem’ (my Creator who makes a way for us), and in him I trust.
Surely he will save you, little chicks, from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.
Like a mother hen he will cover you with his feathers and under his wings you will find refuge.
His faithfulness will be your shield and your rampart (the defensive wall around your castle).
You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.
If you make El-yone’ (the Most High God who sees everything) your dwelling place, if you don’t live in terms of this visible world but with Jesus Christ in his invisible Kingdom of the Heavens –
I’m speaking of Yahweh (the I AM who has promised to love us intimately forever) who is my refuge –
Then no harm will befall you. No disaster will come near your tent. This world is a perfectly safe place for you to be because you are with Jesus in his eternal Kingdom of the Heavens.
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their hands so you do not strike your foot against a stone, so you don’t trip and fall off of the path of life.
Yes, you, little chick, will tread upon the lion and the cobra! You will trample the great lion and the serpent! In Christ you are an overcomer!
Because he loves me says Yahweh (the I AM who has promised to love us intimately forever) I will rescue him. I will protect him for he acknowledges my name.
I will be with him in trouble, in all the problems and pains he encounters in this visible world, I will deliver him and honor him in my Kingdom.
He will call upon me and I will answer him. With eternal living in my Kingdom of the Heavens I will satisfy him and show him my salvation through Jesus Christ.
(My Psalm 91 Meditation uses the NIV84 translation with the Hebrew names for God from the text and my added paraphrases.)
Take moment to reflect and pray on these questions. If you’re doing this meditation with a friend you may want to share your answers and pray for one another. If you’re doing it alone it’d be good that with a friend later…
What is the most hurtful thing you have been through in your life? Perhaps it’s a way that you were wounded or mistreated as a child. Or maybe something bad that you went through later in life…
What is something that you are afraid of or worried about? Perhaps you’re afraid to be alone or to fail at something important. Or maybe you’re afraid for a loved one…
