Drink from a Deep Well of Devotion

By Bill Gaultiere © 2010

What refreshment awaits you! What joy! All we have to do is to pause and appreciate Christ in our midst as we do whatever we’re doing – like right now!

Psalm 73 is a great help along these lines. This prayer of Asaph is a deep well that offers us Living Water for our thirsty souls. His heart for God is infectious. By praying his words we can grow in our devotion to the Lord. And when we submit our whole selves to God heaven opens up to us! Whole-hearted dedication to love God in all things is the key to [...]

The One Benediction You Need

By Bill Gaultiere © 2010

Answered prayer. Success. Victory. We all want to be blessed, to achieve great things, and to overcome our challenges. But when we reach for these desires we can never quite grasp them. The pursuit of happiness never makes anyone happy.

That’s why years ago my spiritual father, Ray Ortlund, encouraged me to “Be all and only for Jesus!” He wanted the best for me. And so he liked to pray Psalm 20 for me. Recently, Psalm 20 inspired me to write a “Benediction of Devotion.”

I’d like to share this short prayer of blessing with you. It’s meant so much to me [...]

Sweet Words of Jesus

By Bill Gaultiere © 2010

One day I got up before sunrise to walk and pray in the quiet.  I prayed Psalm 119:103 over and over:

“How sweet are your words to my taste, [O Lord Jesus,] sweeter than honey to my mouth” (Psalm 119:103).

The Holy Spirit brought to my mind paraphrases of some of the sweet words of Jesus. I tasted them and found them delicious! I meditated on them and received nourishment for my soul. I prayed them and was strengthened to love my neighbor as the Lord loves me.

Take a moment now to taste the honey sweet words of Jesus Christ.

And then [...]

Jesus is My Refuge

On Palm Sunday Jesus wept over Jerusalem because the people didn’t recognize him (Luke 19:41). Later in Holy Week Jesus cried out for us all: “O how I have longed to gather you as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings!” (Matthew 23:37, paraphrase).

Do you desire to be that close to Christ? David sought to take refuge under the wings of the Lord, snuggled up to his chest. We can “take heart” from him.

In Psalm 61:1-4 David is in a desert wilderness and he prays: “Hear my cry, O God… From the ends of the earth I call to you… Lead me to [...]

A Love Note to Jesus

Make a Heart for Jesus!First thing every morning, as part of offering The Apprentice Prayer, I say, “I love you Jesus!”

It’s a simple prayer, but said with a smile from my heart it makes a big difference. It reminds me to make all that I say and do that day as an expression of love for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

At Valentine’s Day we think affectionately about our significant other – or wish that we felt that way… or wish that we had a significant other! How about thinking of your Significant Other: Jesus Christ? How about sending a love note to Jesus?

[...]

Devoted to You

Make Christ your FocusDavid is known as a man after God’s heart because of the way he prays. I so desire to be known as one who has a heart for God, don’t you?

You and I can grow to be more of a person after God’s heart! David shows us how in Psalm 86. In prayer dedicate each aspect of your person to the Lord. Psalm 86 is not well-known, but it’s one of my favorite of David’s prayers. It’s a prayer of whole-hearted devotion to the Lord. Let’s “take heart” from David!

Join me in praying “Devoted to You,” a prayer I adapted from Psalm [...]
