Can You Live without Hurrying?

By Bill Gaultiere © 2011

What if you never hurried? Could you live that way?

Lots of work to do? No hurry. Late for an appointment? No hurry. Sightseeing on vacation? No hurry. House needs to be clean and company is coming over soon? No hurry. Climbing the corporate ladder? No hurry. Dealing with a difficult person? No hurry. Can’t seem to get into a conversation? No hurry. Seeking help for emotional pain? No hurry. Behind in reading through your One Year Bible? No hurry.

“If you don’t hurry then you’ll miss out.” That’s the fear. It’s half true. You can do more if you hurry. But you won’t enjoy the [...]

Negative Emotions

Shepherd of Psalm 23

By Bill Gaultiere © 2011

Negative emotions. We all have them. We all have struggled with how to deal with emotions like worry, anger, depression, shame, ambition, lust, and jealousy—even a psychologist like me who has devoted 24 years to helping people overcome emotional problems.

Of course, having an emotion isn’t a problem—it’s normal. But how do we respond to troubling emotions? That’s the issue.

Emotions become “negative” when they are internalized or acted on in ways that harm yourself or others. Many of the ministry leaders and other Christ followers that we talk to struggle with negative emotions.

Learn from the Psalmist

“Do not worry… Do [...]

Hurry to Spill Mercy

Usually its better to slow down!

By Bill Gaultiere © 2010

I was coming down the stairs this morning with my arms full and heading out to an appointment that I was going to be late for when I spilled my cup full of cereal all down the stairs and across the entry! This is a parable…

Most pastors and leaders that my wife Kristi and I minister to have the same problem I had this morning – they’re carrying too much and they’re moving too fast. They’re under tremendous stress and have difficulty making time for the intimacy with Jesus that they crave and that [...]

Jesus, in Your Name I Hope

The way to life and freedom is to trust in the name of the Lord. The wise man says: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:12).

But what does it mean to trust in the name of the Lord? In my personal life and in my ministry as a psychologist and spiritual mentor I have learned that we must learn to bring our reliance upon the name of the Lord into our daily life challenges and struggles.

Today I was about to hurry as I drove until I breathed the name of Jesus in prayer.

I helped [...]

Trying to Get More Done in Less Time?

Usually its better to slow down!

Usually its better to slow down!

I was talking with a friend who likes to drive in the fast lane.  He thrives on trying to get more done in less time in order to be successful.  He’s very productive… and stressed.

He doesn’t realize that he’s continually recruiting adrenaline to give him the boost of energy and confidence that he feels he needs to handle all of his responsibilities.  His body’s production of adrenaline is like his own drug manufacturing plant!  He has adrenaline dependence.

Other people get their adrenaline hits through extreme sports, risky behavior, or loud music.

Adrenaline is God’s gift to us.  It’s [...]

How Fasting Could Help You

Let your hunger pangs be as church bells Let your hunger pangs be as church bells

By Bill Gaultiere © 2009

I tell people that Fasting is Feasting on God’s Word.

A ministry leader responded: “It’s hard enough for me to quiet my mind when I’m not hungry!  How can I learn to enjoy meditating on Scripture when I’m hungry? And why would I want to do this?”

I use fasting (from food, but drinking plenty of water) as part of my own rhythm of life with Christ. I learned this years ago from reading Thomas a Kempis’ classic [...]
