Eileen Needed a Fresh Touch from God

We all long for a fresh touch of God in our souls. Often it comes when we hear someone share vulnerably about a personal struggle that we relate with and then we see how God showed up in that person’s life. Immediately we feel hope! Yes, Lord Jesus, I yearn to connect with you like that!

Our friend Eileen experienced a fresh touch from God that she’d like to share with you. Kristi and I pray that her story inspires your hope in Jesus. This most wonderful hope is stored up in the heavens all around you and it is the refreshing spring to greater faith and love (Colossians 1:4-5).

Stressed and Disconnected from God

Last year Eileen took courage to Venture on God in a big way when she sensed Jesus calling her to step out in faith to open her own psychotherapy practice.

She said to us, “As soon as I signed the office lease I felt the stress. I worried, This is a big commitment. Are you sure God is leading you to do this?

“Suddenly, I was responsible for everything! Business plans, financial management, legal forms, marketing, developing a website, and shopping for furniture. Even little things like picking out stationary and business cards became burdens! For the first time in my career, I had to work outside of my gifting as a therapist.

“In the weeks and months that followed I found myself operating on overload. I was feeling more and more overwhelmed, anxious, and drained. Of course, I sought God’s help and healing, but I couldn’t seem to connect. I was too distracted. Without realizing it my heart had drifted from the One I love.”

Stuck in Spiritual Dryness

Probably you’ve felt distant from God at times. The Psalmist prays, “O Lord… How long will you hide your face from me?” (Psalm 13:1). I wonder how you deal with it when you feel distant from God?

Most people we talk to don’t know how to deal with spiritual dryness, especially if it’s a  Dark Night of the Soul. Many wear themselves out trying harder to connect with God. Others put guilt on themselves and feel bad. Some pretty much give up and carry on in life and even in ministry to others without experiencing any real intimacy with Jesus.

Eileen tried harder. She kept trying to find her way back to the Lord. Her Sunday church services, weekly Bible studies, and daily quiet times of studying the Word and journaling were all good, but for some reason they weren’t renewing her. She felt like she was going through the motions. God felt distant and she wasn’t experiencing his peace. She longed for a fresh touch from God in her soul.

Spiritual Renewal is for Sharing!

Then a pastor who is a mutual friend connected her with Soul Shepherding. She started coming to our monthlyThirst! meetings and periodic retreat days. She learned that trying harder to connect with God wouldn’t work — she needed to try differently — she needed to go into spiritual training with Jesus. She began to engage her heart more deeply with God through meditating on Scripture, offering prayers of the heart, setting aside extended hours of solitude with Jesus, and sharing in soul talk with others who were thirsty for God.

As Eileen opened her heart to Jesus it was like she was falling in love with her Lord all over again!

Her face beamed as she told Kristi and I, “It’s wonderful to experience the joy of Christ’s presence in my life. My prayer room at home has become sweet again. Most of all, I’ve realized that I can do everything I do with Jesus.”

One of the things that Eileen does with Jesus is offer counseling to people. In her psychotherapy office (EileenCallahan.com) she loves to help client’s who need help with relationship issues or life stress experience the peace of Christ. She offers them the fresh touch from God that has blessed her.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).
